A revision timetable you will actually follow

Most self-made revision timetables give each subject one long block and then colour it in. This one does the opposite: every topic gets several short visits spread across the weeks, because that is what the evidence supports and it is the part almost every timetable gets wrong.

This is not an assessment. Nothing here is scored or compared, and there is no correct number of hours. It is a blank structure for one revision period.


The period

Pick a block length you have actually sustained before, not the one you would like to be capable of. Shorter blocks that happen beat longer blocks that get abandoned, and short blocks are what spacing needs anyway.

Topics, and when each one comes round

One row per topic — not per module. "Nineteenth-century poetry" is a topic; "English" is a module and is too big to date. Give each topic three dates spread across the period. The gaps matter more than the total hours.

For example: Enzyme kinetics — 4 May, 11 May, 22 May. Three short visits, not one long afternoon.

What a block contains

A visit is not a reread. Write down what you will actually do in one, so that the block has a first five minutes you do not have to invent while tired.

For example: blank page, ten minutes writing what I remember, then check against notes, then five past-paper questions on the gaps.

The missed-block rule

Every revision plan meets a day that does not happen. The plan usually dies there — not because one block was lost, but because losing it turns the timetable into a debt, and rebuilding the whole thing is harder than ignoring it. Decide the rule now, while nothing has gone wrong, and write it on the sheet.

A rule that works for most people: a missed block is skipped, not moved. The next visit to that topic stands as planned. If a topic is missed twice, it goes into the one catch-up slot and nothing else does.

Leave the catch-up slot empty when it arrives and nothing is owed. An unused slot is not wasted time — it is the reason the rest of the timetable survives contact with a bad week.

What to ask the department for

A timetable built on spacing needs two things a student cannot produce alone, and both are ordinary requests.

  • The topic list, early. You cannot spread study across six weeks if you do not know what the topics are until week five. Ask for the examinable topic list at the start of the module, not at the end. This is the single change that makes spaced revision possible for a whole cohort.
  • Past papers and practice questions on the module page. A visit built around retrieval needs questions. Where the department supplies none, every student writes their own out of material they do not yet know well, which is the hardest version of the task and duplicated hundreds of times over.
  • Exam dates published far enough ahead to plan against. A timetable released three weeks before the first paper forces massed study by design, whatever the study advice says.

A course rep can put all three in one email. It is a better use of effort than each student solving it privately in the same week.

Why this sheet is shaped like this

Spreading study across days rather than stacking it into one session has a large body of evidence behind it (Cepeda, Pashler, Vul, Wixted & Rohrer, Psychological Bulletin 132(3), 2006 — a meta-analysis in which spaced study beat massed study). Distributed practice and practice testing were also the two techniques rated high utility in Dunlosky, Rawson, Marsh, Nathan and Willingham's review of what students actually do (Psychological Science in the Public Interest 14(1), 2013), where highlighting and rereading were rated low. Testing yourself on material beat restudying it in Roediger and Karpicke, Psychological Science 17(3), 2006 — which is why a block above is a retrieval session rather than a reading session.

Writing a date next to each visit is doing more work than it looks like: deciding when and where you will do something has a medium-to-large effect across a large body of studies (Gollwitzer & Sheeran, Advances in Experimental Social Psychology 38, 2006).

What the evidence does not settle is the exact spacing — how many days between visits, or how many visits a topic needs. Three visits here is a practical default, not a finding. If a topic is still blank on the second visit, it wants a fourth.
