Studying with your phone nearby

The short version

  • A phone costs you twice: once when it interrupts you, and once just by sitting there. The second cost is the one almost nobody accounts for.
  • It costs most on long, demanding work in a room you cannot control, and costs almost nothing on short admin where the phone is the fastest tool available.
  • This is not a character question. Where you study decides more than how much you want it to work.

You know the interruption version. A message arrives, you read it, you reply, you come back and spend a minute finding the sentence you were in the middle of. That cost is obvious, everyone has felt it, and most writing about phones is about that.

The other version is stranger. In one study, people did worse on demanding thinking tasks with their own phone on the desk than with it in another room — while it was switched off, face down and untouched. No message came. No screen lit. Something about the device being within reach appeared to occupy capacity the task then did not get.

The two costs want different responses, which is why lumping them together produces advice that does not work.

Interruption and presence are separate problems

An interruption is an event, so settings work on it: notifications off, badges off, desktop messaging apps quit, a stated window when you reply to people. That handles a real cost and it is worth doing.

Presence is not an event, so settings do not touch it. If the mechanism is proximity, silencing the phone and leaving it beside your notes changes almost nothing about the part described above. Distance is the variable being tested — another room, a bag, a locker, somebody else's pocket.

So "just put it face down" and "put it in another room" are not two strengths of the same advice. They address different costs, and only the second one addresses presence.

What being observed while studying actually looks like

There is a second strand worth knowing about, though it is less settled. Rosen, Carrier and Cheever (Computers in Human Behavior, 2013) watched students study in their own homes and found they switched tasks within minutes, and that more switching went with lower performance. It is an observational study, so it cannot tell you the switching caused the drop — students who are struggling with the material have plenty of reasons to look elsewhere. The finding is best treated as mixed evidence.

What it supplies is a picture worth holding: the switching starts early, it is frequent, and people are usually surprised by their own count when they look. Switching is nearly free at the moment you do it and expensive only afterwards, which is a bad arrangement for any human being.

Where it pays and where it costs

Keeping the phone nearby costs most on long, self-directed, cognitively demanding work — the essay you have to hold in your head, the proof, the reading that only makes sense in whole paragraphs. These are the tasks where a portion of your capacity going elsewhere is expensive, and where the material itself keeps producing moments of difficulty that make reaching for something else feel reasonable.

Keeping the phone nearby pays on work that is short, interruptible or fragmented, and on days when you are genuinely on call. Answering emails, checking a room number, photographing a whiteboard, splitting a bill, sending the message that unblocks somebody else — the phone is the fastest tool there, and removing it converts fifteen minutes of admin into an evening's worth of small unfinished things. If you are caring for someone or waiting on a shift message, reachability is not a distraction, it is the job.

What the setting can do

Most study spaces are designed as though the only variable is silence. Silence is the cheap variable. Distance is the one that would help and almost nobody supplies it.

A library that puts a bank of free lockers by the entrance changes what is possible for everyone who walks in, not just the determined. At present, leaving your phone behind needs either a friend you trust or a bag you are willing to leave unattended, so the option effectively does not exist. Lockers make it a thirty-second decision — a small capital cost producing a behaviour that no amount of encouragement produces.

Shared study rooms can also carry a stated norm on the door: phones in the tray, calls in the corridor. In a shared room the person next to you is the one setting your conditions, and a norm nobody has stated is a norm nobody follows. Posting it is free; expecting each person to negotiate it separately is not.

Small things to try this week

  1. Study one session with the phone out of the room and one with it face down beside you. Note what you finished, not how you felt.
  2. Pick a reply window — say, the ten minutes at the end of every hour — and tell one person about it.
  3. Notice what is happening at the moment you reach. If it is usually the same moment, the phone is not the thing to change.

If a fortnight of this shifts nothing, that is information rather than failure. It usually points at the room, the timetable or the task's shape, and those are the parts worth going after next.

Worth knowing. Ward, Duke, Gneezy and Bos (Journal of the Association for Consumer Research 2(2), 2017) found that the mere presence of one's own phone reduced available cognitive capacity, even switched off and face down. Rosen, Carrier and Cheever (Computers in Human Behavior 29(3), 2013) observed students switching tasks within minutes while studying, with switching predicting lower performance; that one is observational and the evidence is mixed, so treat it as a description rather than a cause.
